About Jon Kabat-Zinn
Jon Kabat-Zinn - Biography
Jon Kabat-Zinn is an American professor emeritus of medicine who created the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program in 1979 at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center to help chronically ill patients unresponsive to traditional treatments. Drawing from Buddhist meditation practices, he secularized mindfulness techniques, combining them with body awareness and yoga to address stress, pain, and illness. His work has led to widespread adoption of MBSR in medical, educational, and correctional settings worldwide.
Jon Kabat-Zinn, born in 1944, was introduced to meditation as a student at MIT by Zen teacher Philip Kapleau and later studied with Buddhist figures including Thích Nhất Hạnh, Seung Sahn, and at the Insight Meditation Society. Initially trained in molecular biology, he shifted focus to applying meditation scientifically, founding the Stress Reduction Clinic (later renamed for Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction) at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in 1979. This eight-week program targeted chronically ill patients, integrating mindfulness meditation, yoga, and body awareness into a secular framework stripped of explicit Buddhist references to fit medical contexts. Kabat-Zinn expanded his efforts by establishing the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society at the University of Massachusetts, promoting MBSR globally through books, training, and clinics. His approach gained traction in the 1990s with publications and the opening of numerous MBSR programs in hospitals and holistic medicine settings. Mindful Yoga, blending meditation and Hatha yoga, emerged from his practice, emphasizing 'moment-to-moment awareness' for coping with stress and illness. Today, Kabat-Zinn is professor emeritus, with MBSR influencing neuroscience research showing brain changes like prefrontal cortex thickening and amygdala reduction, alongside benefits for stress, anxiety, and immune function. His secular adaptation has made mindfulness a staple in Western medicine, schools, prisons, and veterans' centers.
