About Charles Darwin
Charles Darwin - Biography
Charles Robert Darwin was an English naturalist who developed the theory of evolution by natural selection. His work revolutionized biology and challenged Victorian religious views.
Charles Robert Darwin was born on February 12, 1809, in Shrewsbury, England. He was the fifth of six children in a wealthy family. Darwin's early education was at Shrewsbury School, followed by medical studies at Edinburgh University, which he abandoned due to his aversion to surgery. He then attended Christ's College, Cambridge, where he was mentored by John Stevens Henslow. Henslow recommended Darwin for the HMS Beagle voyage, which lasted from 1831 to 1836 and was pivotal in forming his ideas on evolution. Darwin's 1859 publication, 'On the Origin of Species,' introduced the theory of evolution by natural selection. He continued to publish influential works on evolution, human descent, and emotions until his death on April 19, 1882. Darwin was buried in Westminster Abbey, a testament to his impact on science.
