Neil Armstrong - Biography

Neil Armstrong was a U.S. naval aviator, test pilot, and NASA astronaut who became the first human to walk on the Moon during the Apollo 11 mission on July 20, 1969.

Neil Alden Armstrong was born on August 5, 1930, in Wapakoneta, Ohio. He developed an early passion for flight, earning a student pilot's license at age 16. During the Korean War, he served as a naval aviator, flying 78 combat missions. After the war, he completed a Bachelor of Science in aeronautical engineering at Purdue University. Armstrong joined NACA in 1955 as a research pilot and flew over 200 different aircraft types. Selected as NASA's first civilian astronaut in 1962, he commanded Gemini 8 and Apollo 11, becoming the first person to walk on the Moon. After retiring from NASA in 1971, he pursued roles in engineering, education, and private industry. He passed away on August 25, 2012.
