About Rick Rubin

Rick Rubin - Biography

Rick Rubin is an influential American record producer who co-founded Def Jam Recordings in 1983 while at New York University, helping pioneer hip-hop with acts like LL Cool J, Beastie Boys, and Run-DMC. He later founded Def American Recordings (later American Recordings) in 1988, expanding into rock, metal, and diverse genres, producing multiplatinum albums for Red Hot Chili Peppers, Johnny Cash, and others.

Rick Rubin grew up on Long Island, New York, developing an early interest in music; he began playing guitar in ninth grade, formed a high school band called The Pricks, and was inspired by Run-DMC to pursue production over filmmaking studies at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts. While at NYU, he formed the punk band Hose, whose 1982 single became Def Jam's first release, packaged in a plain brown paper bag. In 1983, Rubin co-founded Def Jam Recordings from his dorm room with Russell Simmons, leveraging Simmons' hip-hop connections; their first hit was LL Cool J's 'I Need a Beat' (1984), followed by the platinum album Radio, blending hip-hop and metal elements. Tensions led Rubin to leave Def Jam in 1988 after disputes with president Lyor Cohen and Simmons, prompting his move to Los Angeles where he launched Def American Recordings, signing heavy metal acts like Slayer and Danzig. He achieved breakthrough success producing Red Hot Chili Peppers' 1991 multiplatinum Blood Sugar Sex Magik, establishing his reputation across genres. Rubin renamed his label American Recordings in 1993 (dropping 'Def' at the request of the U.S. Department of Justice) and worked from a distinctive I.M. Pei-designed Santa Monica studio, producing for artists like Johnny Cash (American Recordings series), Tom Petty, and the Black Crowes. In the 2000s and beyond, Rubin continued his eclectic output, earning Grammy recognition for work with U2, Green Day, Metallica, Neil Diamond, Weezer, and Adele's 21 (2011 Album of the Year contributor). He revived American Recordings under Republic Records in 2012, collaborating with ZZ Top, Avett Brothers, and others, while producing Eminem's Revival (2017) and the Strokes' The New Abnormal (2020). Rubin is noted for his philosophical, artist-focused approach emphasizing creativity over technical intervention.
