About Sergey Brin

Sergey Brin - Biography

Sergey Brin is an American computer scientist and entrepreneur who co‑founded Google with Larry Page while a PhD student at Stanford University. He served as Google’s president of technology and later as president of Alphabet Inc. until stepping down from that executive role in December 2019, and he has led major exploratory projects including self‑driving cars (Waymo) and Google X “moonshots.”

Sergey Mikhailovich Brin was born in Moscow, Soviet Union, on August 21, 1973; his family emigrated to the United States when he was six years old, settling in Maryland where he grew up in a family that emphasized education and science. He earned a Bachelor of Science in mathematics and computer science from the University of Maryland, College Park, where he developed strong skills in math and programming that presaged his later research work. In 1993 Brin entered a PhD program in computer science at Stanford University, where he met Larry Page; the two collaborated on a research project that analyzed web link structure to rank pages, initially named BackRub, which evolved into Google. The pair left Stanford to found Google in 1998 after receiving early funding (including an early check from Andy Bechtolsheim) and incorporated the company in a garage in Menlo Park, California. Brin served as Google’s president of technology and, with Page and later Eric Schmidt, led the company through rapid growth, an IPO in 2004, and expansion into many product areas beyond search. Over time Brin became a principal driver of the company’s exploratory “moonshot” initiatives, heading Google X and sponsoring projects such as self‑driving cars (which became Waymo), smart contact lenses, and other experimental hardware and AI efforts. In 2015 Google reorganized under a parent company, Alphabet Inc., with Brin serving as president of Alphabet until he and Page stepped down from their day‑to‑day executive roles on December 3, 2019 while remaining board members and controlling shareholders. After stepping back from daily management Brin has continued to be associated with advanced-technology initiatives within Alphabet and retained influence over AI and other strategic efforts.
