'Ocean With David Attenborough' Director Interview -- Doc Talk Podcast

David Attenborough was born on 8 May 1926 in London and grew up in Leicester; he read Natural Sciences at the University of Cambridge, graduating with a degree in the late 1940s after wartime service in the Royal Navy and an early career in publishing. Attenborough joined the BBC as a trainee producer in 1952 and first rose to public prominence as the on-screen presenter of Zoo Quest (1954–1964), a series that filmed animals in the wild and helped expand the BBC’s educational programming. He later moved into BBC leadership roles, becoming Controller of BBC Two in 1965 and then Director of Programmes for BBC Television, where he helped introduce colour television and commissioned major cultural and educational series. In 1973 Attenborough resigned from BBC management to return to making documentaries and went on to create the landmark Life series — starting with Life on Earth (1979) and followed by The Living Planet, The Private Life of Plants and subsequent series that together form The Life Collection — which established a new standard for long-form natural history storytelling. During the 21st century Attenborough continued to present major series including The Blue Planet, Planet Earth, and sequels such as Blue Planet II and Planet Earth II, while increasingly focusing on environmental themes including climate change, biodiversity loss and sustainable practices; his work earned multiple awards and global recognition and he has used public platforms to advocate for conservation policy and behavior change.
