About Anne Lamott
Anne Lamott - Biography
Anne Lamott is an acclaimed American novelist and nonfiction writer known for her humorous, honest explorations of alcoholism, single motherhood, depression, and Christianity.
Anne Lamott was born on April 10, 1954, in San Francisco, California, to writer Kenneth Lamott and grew up in Marin County. She graduated from Drew School and attended Goucher College on a tennis scholarship for two years, writing for the school newspaper before dropping out to pursue writing in the Bay Area. She briefly worked as an editor for womenSports magazine. Her father's 1970s brain cancer diagnosis inspired her first novel, Hard Laughter (published 1980, though written earlier), a semi-autobiographical account of coping with loss through laughter and truth-telling, which received praise from authors like Anne Tyler. Lamott's career expanded in the 1980s and 1990s with novels such as Rosie (1983), Joe Jones (1985), All New People (1989), and Crooked Little Heart (1997), often exploring themes of loss and personal struggle. Her nonfiction breakthrough came with Operating Instructions (1993), a bestselling journal of her son's first year as a single mother, blending humor and poignancy. She drew from her own battles with alcoholism, drug use, atheism-to-Christianity conversion, and depression, establishing her as a voice of compassion and self-deprecation. Works like Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life (1994) became essential guides for writers. In the 2000s and beyond, Lamott published novels including Blue Shoe (2002) and Imperfect Birds (2010), alongside nonfiction hits like Traveling Mercies (1999), Plan B (2005), Grace (Eventually) (2007), Help, Thanks, Wow (2012), Some Assembly Required (2012, about her grandson's birth), Almost Everything (2018), and Dusk, Night, Dawn (2020). She has taught at UC Davis, led nationwide writing seminars, and been featured in Freida Lee Mock's 1999 documentary Bird by Bird with Annie. A progressive activist and public speaker based in Marin County, Lamott continues writing from her home studio, with over 20 books to her name.
