Carl Sagan was an American astronomer and planetary scientist renowned for advancing exobiology and popularizing science through books and TV. He contributed to NASA missions and created interstellar messages like the Pioneer plaque and Voyager Golden Record.
Carl Sagan was born on November 9, 1934, in Brooklyn, New York. He pursued higher education at the University of Chicago, earning multiple degrees, including a Ph.D. in astronomy and astrophysics. Sagan worked as a Miller Fellow at UC Berkeley and later joined Harvard's astronomy faculty. In 1968, he moved to Cornell University, where he became a professor and director of the Laboratory for Planetary Studies. Sagan's NASA roles included contributions to Mariner, Viking, and Voyager missions. He co-wrote and hosted the PBS series Cosmos, which reached over 500 million viewers. Sagan authored over 20 books and was a co-founder of the Planetary Society. He passed away on December 20, 1996, leaving a legacy in planetary science and public outreach.
