About Kobe Bryant

Kobe Bryant - Biography

Kobe Bryant was an American professional basketball player who spent his entire 20-year NBA career with the Los Angeles Lakers and is widely regarded as one of the greatest players in basketball history. After retiring in 2016, he pursued business and creative projects — including winning an Academy Award for an animated short — until his death in 2020.

Kobe Bean Bryant was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and spent part of his childhood in Italy where his father, former NBA player Joe Bryant, played professional basketball; Bryant returned to the U.S., starred at Lower Merion High School in Ardmore, Pennsylvania, and declared for the 1996 NBA Draft out of high school. He was selected 13th overall by the Charlotte Hornets and immediately traded to the Los Angeles Lakers, where he began a 20-year NBA career that started in 1996. In Los Angeles, Bryant developed into one of the league’s premier scorers and competitors, forming an early championship core with center Shaquille O’Neal that produced three consecutive NBA titles from 2000–2002. After O’Neal’s departure, Bryant became the Lakers’ undisputed leader, leading the league in scoring, earning the 2008 NBA Most Valuable Player, and guiding the Lakers to back-to-back championships in 2009 and 2010 — earning Finals MVP in both series. Bryant’s career is notable for prodigious individual accomplishments (including an 81-point game in 2006 and finishing his career with 60 points in his final NBA game in 2016), sustained excellence via 18 All-Star selections, and a reputation for intense competitiveness and preparation often referred to as the “Mamba Mentality.” He also represented the United States internationally, winning Olympic gold medals in 2008 and 2012. After retiring in 2016, Bryant shifted focus to business and creative endeavors: he founded investment and content ventures, authored books, coached youth sports, and produced short films — notably winning the 2018 Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film for Dear Basketball, based on his retirement poem. His life and career ended tragically when he and eight others were killed in a helicopter crash on January 26, 2020; his legacy includes both his on-court accomplishments and post-playing contributions to storytelling, youth development, and business.
