About Sun Tzu

Sun Tzu - Biography

Sun Tzu, also known as Sun Wu, was a Chinese general and philosopher active during China's Spring and Autumn Period. He is traditionally credited with authoring 'The Art of War', a foundational text on military strategy.

Sun Tzu lived during the chaotic Spring and Autumn Period of ancient China, a time of warring states. Traditional accounts describe him as born around 544 BC, possibly in the State of Qi or Wu. Little is known of his early life, but he studied military science and gained fame as a strategist. Around 512 BC, Sun Tzu entered service as a general under King Helü of Wu, training Wu's troops rigorously. Under his guidance, Wu achieved stunning victories, such as capturing the Chu capital Ying in 506 BC. Debates persist on Sun Tzu's historicity; while some portray him as a real figure, others suggest 'The Art of War' was compiled later. He reportedly died around 496 BC.
