About Tamara Mellon
Tamara Mellon - Biography
Tamara Mellon OBE is a British-American fashion entrepreneur best known for co-founding the luxury footwear brand Jimmy Choo in 1996, which she helped grow into a global powerhouse before selling her stake in 2011. She later launched her eponymous brand, Tamara Mellon, in 2013 (relaunched in 2016), emphasizing a 'buy now, wear now' model, female-led leadership, and high-quality direct-to-consumer sales.
Tamara Mellon, born Tamara Yeardye on 7 July 1967, grew up in a privileged but challenging environment as the daughter of British property developer Paul Mellon and his wife Ann. Her early career in fashion began in the early 1990s as an assistant and later accessories editor at British Vogue, where she developed the vision for a ready-to-wear luxury shoe line amid the rising popularity of designer accessories like Manolo Blahnik. After being fired from Vogue due to personal struggles including drug use, which led to rehab, she secured a loan from her father to launch Jimmy Choo in 1996 at age 27, partnering with bespoke shoemaker Jimmy Choo and his niece Sandra Choi as creative director. Mellon handled business development, sourcing Italian materials, setting up production in Italy, and building retail partnerships with stores like Harrods, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Bergdorf Goodman, growing the brand to over 100 clients by 2001. Under Mellon's leadership as co-founder and president, Jimmy Choo expanded rapidly, opening its first store on Motcombe Street in London, followed by locations in New York, Las Vegas, and Beverly Hills. In 2001, Equinox Luxury Holdings acquired Jimmy Choo's ready-to-wear share, with Robert Bensoussan as CEO introducing handbags and leather goods; subsequent investments by Lion Capital (2004) and TowerBrook Capital (2007) valued the brand at up to £185 million. Jimmy Choo achieved major accolades, including the ACE Designer Brand of the Year (2008), BFC British Designer Brand of the Year (2008), and Footwear News Brand of the Year (2008). Mellon exited in November 2011 after Labelux acquired the company for £525.5 million, reportedly netting her around £85-£100 million. Post-Jimmy Choo, Mellon relocated from London to New York for her daughter's proximity to her father and launched her namesake brand in 2013 from Los Angeles, adopting a non-seasonal 'buy now, wear now' approach to footwear, handbags, and eveningwear. Relaunched in 2016 with CEO Jill Layfield and chief data officer Tania Spinelli, the brand emphasizes an all-female leadership team, equity sharing for employees, premium Italian leathers at luxury-competitive factory prices, and direct sales bypassing wholesalers to maintain quality and margins. Mellon's approach reflects her lessons from Jimmy Choo, focusing on female empowerment, ownership culture, and disrupting traditional fashion models. She received an OBE from Queen Elizabeth II in 2010 for her fashion industry impact.
