About Julie Smith
Julie Smith - Biography
Dr Julie Smith is a chartered clinical psychologist, bestselling author and online educator who built a global audience by sharing concise, evidence-based mental health content on social platforms after a decade of clinical work in the NHS and private practice. Her debut book Why Has Nobody Told Me This Before? became a top-selling nonfiction title and she continues to speak internationally on anxiety, burnout, emotional intelligence and resilience.
Dr Julie trained and practised as a clinical psychologist in the UK, working across a wide range of NHS services including primary care, acute and intensive care wards, crisis teams and a specialist ward created for the Ministry of Defence, before running a private practice for nearly a decade. She is chartered by the British Psychological Society (BPS), registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), and is a member of the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP). In 2019–2020 Dr Julie began publishing short, practical mental-health videos online; during the COVID-19 pandemic her bite-sized, evidence-based tips rapidly expanded her reach and she now has multi-million follower counts across platforms, establishing herself as a leading online resource for younger audiences seeking accessible psychological skills. Building on her online presence, she authored Why Has Nobody Told Me This Before?, which became a major commercial success (top-selling nonfiction and long-running on bestseller lists) and has been translated into multiple languages, followed by a second book, Open When…, released in January 2025 and also reaching high chart positions. She regularly delivers keynote talks and workshops for organisations on managing anxiety, combating burnout, building confidence, and practical emotional-intelligence strategies. Dr Julie continues to combine clinical practice (private practice noted in profiles), public education via social media and traditional publishing, and international speaking engagements; speaker agencies and booking pages list her for corporate and conference events, demonstrating an ongoing career blending therapy, education and public advocacy for mental wellbeing.
