Sylvester Stallone

Sylvester Stallone was born Michael Sylvester Gardenzio Stallone on July 6, 1946, in New York City and grew up in a working-class family; early in his career he took small film and television roles while pursuing screenwriting to break through in Hollywood. His breakthrough came when he wrote the screenplay for Rocky and insisted on playing the lead role himself; Rocky (1976) became a major critical and commercial success, winning Best Picture at the Academy Awards and earning Stallone Oscar nominations for Best Actor and Best Original Screenplay. Following Rocky, Stallone wrote, directed and starred in multiple sequels (including Rocky II and Rocky III) and created another major franchise with First Blood (1982), introducing the character John Rambo and establishing Stallone as a dominant action lead of the 1980s. Across the 1980s and 1990s he starred in high-profile action films such as Cliffhanger, Demolition Man, Tango & Cash, and Over the Top, while also experiencing periods of critical or box-office decline with titles like Judge Dredd and Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot. In the 2000s Stallone retooled his career as both a star and franchise-builder: he launched The Expendables (2010), writing, directing and fronting an ensemble cast of action stars, and later produced and acted in sequels and other franchise entries. In 2015 he revived the Rocky legacy as mentor to a new generation in Creed (2015), a move that earned Stallone a Golden Globe win and renewed critical recognition for his work.
