About Tobi Lütke

Tobi Lütke - Biography

Tobias “Tobi” Lütke (born July 16, 1981) is a German-born programmer and entrepreneur who co-founded Shopify after building an in-house e-commerce system for his online snowboard shop and later pivoting it into a platform for other merchants. Under his technical leadership, Shopify grew into a global e-commerce ecosystem serving hundreds of thousands of merchants and making Lütke one of Canada’s wealthiest tech founders.

Tobias Lütke was born in Koblenz, Germany, and developed an early interest in computers and programming, completing an apprenticeship at Siemens rather than following a traditional academic path. Accounts note he faced learning-style challenges while showing strong technical aptitude and a preference for hands-on software work from a young age. Lütke moved to Canada in 2002 after meeting his future wife online, and in 2004 he co-founded Snowdevil, an online snowboard retailer, with partners including Scott Lake; frustrated with available e-commerce software, Lütke built a custom platform for the store using Ruby on Rails. The in-house system quickly proved more valuable than the retail business and led the team to refocus on the software product. Shopify was launched commercially in 2006 after Lütke and his co-founders shifted from selling snowboards to selling e-commerce software, adopting subscription pricing in 2007 and gradually expanding features such as APIs and an app ecosystem that attracted developers and merchants. As CEO and a deeply technical founder, Lütke guided Shopify through rapid growth, public listing, and platform expansion while gaining industry recognition including national honors and media awards; his leadership style is frequently discussed in profiles and interviews emphasizing product-centric engineering culture.
