About Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Joseph Gordon-Levitt - Biography

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is an actor, filmmaker, and entrepreneur whose three-decade career spans child stardom on 3rd Rock from the Sun, indie hits like Brick and Mysterious Skin, and blockbusters such as Inception and The Dark Knight Rises.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt was born in Los Angeles to a Jewish family and raised in Sherman Oaks, California. He began performing at age four in a musical theater production of The Wizard of Oz as the Scarecrow, leading to an agent and early commercials for brands like Cocoa Puffs and Pop-Tarts. His acting career started at six with TV films, episodes of Family Ties and Quantum Leap, and a lead role in the 1991 Dark Shadows revival as David Collins. Feature film debuts followed in 1992's Beethoven and A River Runs Through It, with a starring role in 1994's Angels in the Outfield earning a Young Artist Award and Saturn Award nomination. From 1996 to 2001, he gained prominence as Tommy Solomon on the sitcom 3rd Rock from the Sun. After a hiatus to attend Columbia University—briefly dropping out due to Final Cut Pro inspiring independent filmmaking—he returned with indie roles in Manic (2001), Mysterious Skin (2004), and Brick (2005). Breakthrough mainstream success came with 500 Days of Summer (2009), earning a Golden Globe nomination, followed by high-profile films like Inception (2010), The Dark Knight Rises (2012), Looper (2012), Lincoln (2012), and Snowden (2016). In 2010, amid career stagnation, Gordon-Levitt co-founded HITRECord with his brother Dan (who died that year), evolving it from a simple site tied to Mysterious Skin into a venture-backed ($6.4 million) 'community-sourced' production company. It fosters global artist collaboration, producing books, records, brand videos for LG and ACLU, and Emmy-winning shows like HitRecord on TV (2014–15) and Create Together (2020). He made his screenwriting and directing debut with Don Jon (2013), nominated for Independent Spirit Award for Best First Screenplay. Recent work includes Mr. Corman (Apple TV+), Super Pumped (as Uber founder), Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F (Netflix), and advocacy on AI ethics via op-eds and speeches.
