Joseph Gordon-Levitt was born in Los Angeles to a Jewish family and raised in Sherman Oaks, California. He began performing at age four in a musical theater production of The Wizard of Oz as the Scarecrow, leading to an agent and early commercials for brands like Cocoa Puffs and Pop-Tarts.
