Luis von Ahn - Biography
Luis von Ahn is a Guatemalan computer scientist and entrepreneur who co-invented CAPTCHA and created reCAPTCHA, which was acquired by Google in 2009. He co-founded and leads Duolingo, the world's most popular language-learning platform.
Born in Guatemala City to two doctors, Luis von Ahn grew up exploring his mother's family candy factory and faced educational inequalities. His mother invested heavily in his education, sparking his early interest in computers. As an international student, he earned a bachelor's in mathematics from Duke University and a Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University, later becoming a faculty member there. Von Ahn's breakthroughs began with co-inventing CAPTCHA, followed by reCAPTCHA, which digitized books by crowdsourcing users. He sold reCAPTCHA to Google in 2009. In 2011, he co-founded Duolingo with Severin Hacker to democratize language education. The platform grew to over 300-500 million users, offering nearly 40 languages by 2020. He remains CEO, holds 13 U.S. patents, and serves as a consulting professor at Carnegie Mellon. Von Ahn established the Luis von Ahn Foundation in 2021 to improve life in Guatemala.
