Susan Wojcicki - Biography

Susan Diane Wojcicki served as CEO of YouTube from 2014 until stepping down in February 2023, leading the platform’s expansion into a global video ecosystem and new products such as YouTube Premium, YouTube TV, and YouTube Shorts. She was an early Googler (employee #16), led the development of AdSense and Google’s advertising products, and was instrumental in Google’s 2006 acquisition of YouTube.

Susan Diane Wojcicki was a technology executive who helped shape Google’s advertising products and persuaded Google to acquire YouTube in 2006, later serving as YouTube’s CEO from 2014 to 2023. Under her leadership, YouTube expanded monetization options for creators and launched subscription and TV products while growing into one of the world’s largest media platforms. Susan Diane Wojcicki was born July 5, 1968. She studied history and literature at Harvard University and later earned advanced degrees, including an MBA from the UCLA Anderson School of Management. Wojcicki rented her garage to Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin in 1998, becoming an early employee and Google’s first marketing manager in 1999; she led early consumer products including Google Images and Google Video before moving into advertising products. Wojcicki became CEO of YouTube in February 2014 and led the platform through major product launches and growth phases — introducing YouTube Premium, YouTube TV, and YouTube Shorts, expanding creator monetization features, and overseeing global user growth to billions of users. She announced her resignation in February 2023 to focus on family, health, and personal projects while taking an advisory role across Google and Alphabet, and she passed away on August 9, 2024 after a two-year battle with cancer.
